Born and raised in Calgary Alberta, Matt Thauvette began his interest in music from a young age. Unable to convince his parents to by him a drum set Matt used what he could to make his own. His first kit consisted of a splash cymbal he found, an ice cream container filled with coins and a suitcase. Eventually, after realizing Matt’s dedication his parents bought him his first real kit at age 13. Inspired by a variety of musical genres and various drummers, Matt’s determination grew strong. In high school he would regularly skip his academic classes and sneak into the music room to practice. From this young age Matt knew he wanted to study music in University and make a career playing drums. He attended Edmonton’s Grant MacEwan College where he received a Diploma in Music Performance as well as an award for most promising jazz musician. He finished his schooling at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia where he was recognized not only for his ability to play drums but for his strong aptitude for composition. At St. Francis Xavier Matt had the opportunity to play with great young jazz musicians such as Ryan Butler and Justin Litun in the group MRJ and later started MTQ as an outlet for his compositions. The group was quickly recognized by faculty and students and became very popular in the region where they continue to perform and teach.
